I like this by Dorothea Lasky, “You are beautiful (deadpan) movie.”

a cage went in search of a bird

A few things about deadlines: the deadline for submissions for the first issue of Dewclaw is now March 1, unless I told you April 1. This issue is getting full!

Submissions that I receive after March 1 will be considered for the next issue.

A deadline that has passed seems like the silliest thing, just some trinket, but a deadline that has yet to happen is a tyrant.

Anyway, for Dewclaw, March 1 is a tyrant dressed in trinkets.

(“a cage went in search of a bird” is Kafka.)

my review of blake butler’s EVER

Uncategorized — Tags: , , — evelyn @ 1:35 pm

Blake Butler is a giant Saguaro cactus. He’s just sitting out there in the desert watching things happen on Earth and in Earth’s sky. Sometimes David Lynch drives by and recognizes Blake from the last time David Lynch drove by. They exchange signs of recognition in forms like meteor showers and blank stares. Measured ground-to-apex, Blake is almost 13 meters tall. Blake takes up to 75 years to develop a side arm with which he taps you on the shoulder when you think it’s just you in the house. Bats feed on the nectar of Blake’s night-blooming flowers and pollinate the night-blooming flowers of other Saguaro. One day, Blake will get really hot from sitting around in the desert sun, and he’ll explode. It’s a myth that tarantulas come out of Blake when he explodes. What really comes out are sentences, perfectly formed and capable of nesting in your syntax for however long.

I like the poem Everyone Does, which is written by the same person who wrote You’re Going to Die (Timothy Furstnau). You can read Everyone Does on his website.

shitty!

I have been feeling shitty lately. I hope you have been feeling better. If you’ve also been feeling shitty, try making this drink. You’ll need fresh ginger, honey, a lemon, cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes, and some kind of hard liquor, if you want.

First, boil some water. Water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit. If you’re feeling shitty about yourself, you could try focusing on facts. Does that ever help?

Squeeze a lemon into a mug. Then put some honey into it, and the hard liquor. If you don’t know how much to put in, just put in what seems right, you can adjust it later.

Put about six slices of the ginger into the strainer, and put the pepper flakes in the strainer, too. If you don’t have a tea strainer, just put it all into the mug and strain it with your face.

Pour the boiling water into the mug. If you don’t have health insurance, be very careful that you don’t burn yourself. Sometimes when I’m feeling shitty I drop things and spill things. The shitty feelings get worse when later I step in something sticky and I don’t know what it is.

Adam made this drink (without the liquor) for me a few days ago, and I think I felt less shitty after I drank it. I recommend it to you.
