Dewclaw contributors so far include

Claire Donato, Matthew Simmons, Mike Young, and Blake Butler.

Adam will be doing the layout and visuals editing.

I’ve been shopping around for a printer and have a few quotes.

This is taking shape much faster than I expected.

Dewclaw update

I made a page on this blog for Dewclaw. It’s up there in the title bar. There’s more specific information about what Dewclaw will be on that page.

I’ve started asking a few people for submissions. Soon I’ll post more information about who to expect to see in Dewclaw’s pages.

Mike Young tagged me and seven other people to write seven things about ourselves after he was tagged.

Here are my seven:

1. I’m in Minneapolis, Minnesota right now, and I will be here for five more days, visiting my family.

2. I can eat the same thing for breakfast for months at a time, up to a year, even.

3. I don’t drive a car, I own two bikes: a Bridgestone road/touring bike, and a CCM that I built as a fixed-gear that was recently rebuilt and converted to a single-speed by Adam, who can actually build a decent bike.

4. I was named after Evelyn Nesbit after my parents read E.L. Doctorow’s book, Ragtime. Evelyn Nesbit was a “Gibson girl” and a prostitute.

5. In general, dogs frighten me. Given the choice to bike past an unleashed dog or swerve wildly into a lane of traffic, I have swerved wildly, almost causing a van to drive into me once on a road in Greece.

6. When I was a kid I liked reading “true adventure” books like Into the Wild. I still do.

7. “But long periods of time can go by when I don’t even think about sex, when I would rather read, or go through my things and get rid of them.” … “But I always fantasize about being alone. I picture myself walking around the city, never with another person or with a group of friends. I know it’s not what I want; I don’t know why I’m so interested in it.” (from I Go to Some Hollow by Amina Cain.)

dewclaw

A dewclaw is a vestigial digit of the foot of many mammals, birds, and reptiles.

A small magazine that I hope to publish in 2009 will be named “Dewclaw.” Fiction, poetry, photographs and illustrations (of vestigial growths, real or imagined), other objects composed of text and possibly fabric.

If you’d like to submit something, email me and we’ll talk.

Over on the right, I’ve added links to a few favorite online writings. I will probably add to this list while subtracting from it, to control its size somewhat.

Also, thank you, Unsaid Magazine and Harp & Altar, for the Pushcart nominations. Both of these magazines are definite events in the wake of my 2008; I found a bunch of writers who are new to me through Unsaid’s pages, which I wish there were more of. Same with Harp & Altar, which also led me to its fiction editor’s book Fog & Car, very good writing that made me want to do more, find further.

The dunce cap is an optical illusion

on the cover of the book Dunce Cap by Alison Bundy, I just realized. I’ve been rereading that book and recently ordered A Bad Business.

I’ve made other acquisitions:

I pre-ordered Blake Butler’s EVER.

I ordered Great by Brandon Scott Gorrell and Chelsea Martin.

I received something I’ve been searching for for a long time: all two extant issues of Yasmine Alwan & Cynthia Nelson’s magazine, Tantalum.

I had a dream in which a legless man and his dead wife told me that they would return to tell me about my health. On Friday I applied for health insurance.
